Mid October Skiing at Sunday River

Went up to Sunday River on Saturday (October 17th) to get the earliest turns of my life and play with my new VIO POV 1.5 (a review is in the works.) Skiing during peak foliage was a bit surreal, and despite my being rusty and the single open trail being scratchy to say the least, it was still skiing and it was good to be back. Here’s a top to bottom run for your viewing pleasure. Also if anyone has tips or hints on the best approach to editing VIO footage in iMovie, feel free to leave a comment.

Slaythegnar.com – New Ski Stoke Website

Skier666 from the TGR Forums has written the book on the ski trip report. They’ve got soundtracks, comedy, great photography, and ripping skiers. The Tahoe area can be feast or famine in terms of snow but this guy and his crew are out there every week getting it done and having a good time regardless of the conditions. As a New England skier, I can definitely identify with that. Bookmark this and prepare to waste the next couple hours, slaythegnar.com

Karhu Storm

My journey to the Karhu Storm as an alpine touring ski begins with my love for telemark skiing. Since picking up the sport a couple seasons ago the idea of resort skiing on the east has been completely rejuvenated for me. New Englanders know better than anyone just how fickle Ullr can be, and free-heeling has been there to help be through the rough patches by transforming mundane groomers coated in man-made frozen granular into something that is once again exciting and challenging. At some point during this one-sided love affair, I decided that I had achieved a requisite level of confidence to venture outside of the resort and begin touring on my Tele gear, as it was much lighter and more comfortable than anything else I owned. All it took was one morning of bouncing off birch trees, rocks, fallen logs and one mentally challenged labrador retriever, all the while in knee deep powder, to shatter that confidence. While making the 5 mile slog back to the car with my tail between my legs, I had plenty of time to lament squandering a rare weekend powder day in the Whites. Read More »

Flylow Dropkick Pro Ski Pant Review

It was two years ago when I once again found myself in the market for some new pants as I had developed a knack for destroying mine on a seasonal basis. It was early December and I was up at Jay Peak pillaging an early season powder day in conjunction with the Vermont Telemark Festival. Flylow had a table set up, so I decided to swing by and see what this new company I had been reading about on the internets was all about. I was really impressed with how rugged and well thought out all of their designs were, especially considering they were still a relatively young company at the time. They had the original dropkick pant on display but I had read about a new variation the Dropkick Pro which was a soft shell pant in a lighter weight design that was better for touring. I ended up walking away that day with a discount code for their website, and that was pretty much all I needed to push me over the edge and pick up a pair for myself. Read More »

Karhu Team 100

Last season I found myself without a solid every day ski in my quiver that would handle whatever conditions I would encounter on the mountain on any given day. I needed something that would carve on hard pack well, yet provide enough float to be serviceable in deeper snow, crud, or cut up powder when called upon. I needed a daily driver. After some laborious research, mulling various magazine and personal reviews, there was one ski that seemed to be universally loved and completely fit the bill. That ski was the Line Prophet 100: A playful cap-constructed twin that sports a generous sidecut, maple core and a layer of titanal for good measure. A number of seasons ago when the Prophet 100 first debuted, at 100mm under foot, it might have been considered a powder ski in almost any locale save for maybe Utah, where its bigger brother the Prophet 130 was the weapon of choice on deep days. Fast forward a few years and 100 is the new 80 – fat is now mid-fat (yes, even in New England.) Read More »
